Ship Descaling Enters Green Era

2026-05-09

As global environmental regulations tighten, the shipping industry is accelerating its shift away from traditional sandblasting descaling toward cleaner, more efficient alternatives.

Traditional sandblasting generates significant dust and waste, severely impacting worker health and the environment. In recent years, ultra-high pressure water jet technology has become a mainstream choice due to its dust-free, chemical-free, and substrate-friendly advantages. According to industry reports, Chinese companies have independently developed marine ultra-high pressure water jet equipment that effectively strips rust and old coatings.

Meanwhile, descaling robotics technology is advancing rapidly. In early 2026, a Zhejiang-based company launched a new generation of descaling robots featuring a self-developed sealed-gap technology pump, achieving 30% energy savings and extending maintenance intervals from 300 to 2,000 hours.

On the international front, U.S. maritime technology company Seascour recently secured both EPA Safer Choice and Green Marine certifications. Its eco-friendly descaler enables clean-in-place operations while a vessel remains at sea, reducing a two-day drydock job to a three-hour seawater flush.

Industry experts note that green, intelligent, and efficient solutions represent the future of marine maintenance tools. Whether water jet equipment, descaling robots, or eco-friendly chemical descalers, all are driving the industry toward greater sustainability.
